If you are a fan of the Hayao Miyazaki heroine films then you will feel right at home when you step into the world of Big Beasts. The book features rich, textured environments and characters with details full of imagination. I experienced many moments of connection and empathy for Kylie as she navigated through her bewildering circumstances and sometimes perilous journey. I had honest-to-goodness chills down my spine at one moment in chapter 11, showing the level of engagement that Mr. Scott’s storytelling elicits.

This is an intriguing fantasy that keeps the reader as much in the dark as it leaves the heroine, and I mean that in a good way. It gave me questions that I wanted answers to, so I wanted to keep reading. A young girl has some kind of power, and someone wants to use it–and her. The girl doesn’t understand why people are treating her the way they do, but all along the way, she maintains a kindness toward others which is quite appealing. It’s both the action and the mystery of it all that pulls the reader along. And it is a strange world where things are not over-explained to the reader. I liked that–it just added to the questions I wanted answers for. It all makes sense by the end. Very intriguing work!
